Yerba Mate Preparation

How To Make: 8 Easy Steps

Step 1: Gather Your Materials:

Choose a traditional gourd and select a bombilla, a metal straw with a filter at one end, essential for sipping the infusion.

Step 2: Arranging the Yerba:

Fill the gourd with yerba mate, leaving about one-third of the space empty to allow for expansion and proper infusion.

Tilt the gourd to one side and gently tap it, causing the finer particles to settle on one side, creating a slope.

Step 4: Inserting the Bombilla

Insert the bombilla into the yerba mate, placing it on the opposite side of the slope. Ensure the filter end of the bombilla is slightly below the surface of the yerba mate.

Step 5: Preparing the Water

Heat fresh, filtered water to about 160-180°F (70-82°C). Avoid using boiling water, as it can scorch the leaves and alter the taste.

Step 6: Infusing Yerba Mate

Slowly pour the water into the gourd, aiming for the slope and allowing it to gradually saturate the yerba mate.

Let the yerba mate absorb the water for a few seconds before drinking to ensure proper extraction of flavors.

Step 7: Sipping and Refilling

Position the bombilla in your mouth and gently sip the infusion, allowing the filtered straw to capture the liquid while keeping the yerba mate leaves in place.

Continue to sip and enjoy the infusion, occasionally tilting the gourd to different angles to extract different flavors.

Step 8: Refilling the Gourd

As the infusion starts to lose flavor, refill the gourd with hot water, following the same pouring technique.

Repeat the process several times, known as "re-mate," until the flavor weakens significantly or the yerba mate loses its potency.
